10 May 1946

The first scientific exploration from space (71 miles high) was the cosmic radiation experiment launched by the U.S. captured and improved V-2 rocket, the first successful launch of an American V-2 rocket at White Sands Proving Ground. The captured Von Braun and team had only arrived at white sands about 6 months before. This was the third attempt.

This happened on Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin 46th birthday.
